FRIENDLY MOLE DETERENT
Egg-Ed's miraculous mole tip...
Our expert garden adviser Ed (aka Egg-Ed!) has a handy tip for deterring Mr and Mrs Mole from your garden - without the need for a shovel or other nasty device. This is an effective proven MOLE FRIENDLY method by Ed, a man of wisdom and some years I may add! Ed advises that if you want to keep your lawn free from moles, to simply bury empty beer or wine bottles at the edge of your herbaceous borders, say 6 inches from the edge of your lawn, with about 2 inches sitting above the surface of the soil. This works by creating sound vibrations underground when the wind blows down the necks of the bottles, therefore deterring those pesky moles!
HELP GET RID OF SLUGS...
Hedgehogs are a wonderful help to any gardener as they have a great appetitie for slugs and also caterpillars and should therefore be encouraged into our gardens...
During the summer months you probably won't need to encourage hedgehogs as they will happily wander in and munch on those horrid garden pests - but do remember to keep bin bags out of reach as hedgehogs are often found rummaging through the litter for tit bits, and we all know how nasty those baked bean tin lids can be - ouch there goes another nose :-(
But in the autumn they are preparing to hibernate and need to build up as much body fat as possible so they can survive the winter. So on October nights, why not leave out a saucer of pet food, some broken up dog biscuits and a bowl of drinking water as a tasty dinner.
And just remember, if you're going to have winter bonfires it's worth shaking up the pile before you light it just in case old Harry the hedgehog is asleep in the middle!
HEDGEHOG FACT: Did you know that hedgehogs have been around as we know them today for about 15 million years - amazing but true!
